This is the first of a four-part review essay focusing on the “Local Underground Comics” show at the UW-Parkside Foundation Gallery (CART D101), from August 1 – September 30, featuring work by Jerry Belland, Kristopher Pollard, Jeff Mordy and David Byer. This part focuses on the contributions of the former-most artist to the show; subsequent meditations will dwell on the others in sequence. Hyperlinks and photographs soon to come. In a small show featuring four male artists, the stereotypical view might go, a visitor ought to prepare herself for at least the slightest degree of insensitivity to gender dynamics. Whether such preparation is needed for the showcase of underground comics work at the Foundation Gallery that runs through the end of September is hard to tell.
