The Kenosha HarborMarket opens Saturdays at 9:00am and closes at 2:00pm.

A bustling European-style mixed market near Kenosha’s lakefront. Summer finds 100+ vendors of organic produce, meats, cheeses, artisan bakery goods, art and crafts, prepared foods, entertainment, chef demos, and more.

The Market is located on 2nd Avenue between 54th and 56th Street in Kenosha HarborPark, just behind the Kenosha Public Museum and the Civil War Museum.

If you are driving on Interstate 94, take the exit # 342 (Hwy 158) and come all the way east to the lake. At the intersection of 6th Avenue, turn right (south) and proceed to 56th Street. Turn left on 56th Street (east) to Second Avenue.

There are several parking lots in the area and parking is allowed along 56th Street on both sides.

All one has to do is look at the art to get a glimpse into their lives and feel their emotions budding with youthful aspirations. The students were very engaging, proud of their work, willing to talk and of course let me take photos – of which I took a lot!

The art teachers have it right as they tap into the natural raw resource of our community’s youth. Art communicates what is happening in our world and in theirs, proving that art is what keeps the world talking to each other!

Sponsored by the Kenosha Art Association, the exhibit has moved into the streets of downtown Kenosha. So take a look around town this week in various places, such as the the City of Kenosha Municipal Building, KABA, KACVB, Library offices and various windows downtown, to catch a glimpse for yourself …but hurry, they move fast!

I became obsessed with UW-Parkside Archive’s collection of dry plate negatives last year when director Anna Stadick shared them with me. I determined to scan, print and research a group of the negatives for a little show for the Parkside gallery. We have just installed an exhibition of large format digital photographs pulled from high quality scans of the original negatives that date to 188os to early 1900s. These photos show mostly beautiful boats on the Lake Michigan, but there are a few other subjects as well. Enjoy this slide show and vista Parkside’s E. H. Mathis Gallery located in the theatre lobby if you can.

By researching the names of the vessels mentioned in the index to the slidesI found that many of the ships shown were well-known racing yachts at the time. I had no idea that yacht racing was a popular spectator sport at the turn of the century, and that the Lake Michigan Yachting Association hosted a regatta in 1901 that sailed between Chicago and Kenosha. The images are marvelous.

A new outdoor sculpture will grace Downtown Kenosha with the addition of “Heels Overhead” in front of the Kenosha Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, 812 56th St.

“Heels Overhead” will be the 10th outdoor sculpture added to the Sculpture Walk – HarborPark exhibit, coordinated by the Kenosha Community Foundation Arts Fund. The KACVB is sponsoring the sculpture and the installation has received approval from the Kenosha Common Council and support from Kenosha officials, and the Kenosha Arts Commission.

The new sculpture will be installed during National Travel & Tourism Week, on Friday, May 10 at 10 a.m.

The foundation for the sculpture was accomplished when recent repair work in front of the building required the pavement to be replaced. The pavement was poured to the necessary specifications with the hope that it would eventually be home to a sculpture.

“Heels Overhead,” an aluminum piece by artist Paul Bobrowitz, was selected as part of a submission process. The sculpture is 7 feet tall. Bobrowitz currently has another piece titled Rotating Thru the Universe in the existing Sculpture Walk installation. “Heels Overhead” will be on exhibit through the 2013-15 installation and would be replaced with the other temporary sculptures in the 2015-17 installation cycle.

The 2013-15 installation is currently in development. A special Review Panel is now considering 21 possible sculptures submitted as part of a Call for Art process.

“Kai Andersen is a singer-songwriter hailing from Southeast Wisconsin. His music could best be described as “indie-folk-rock with a soulful twist.” This Summer Kai will be embarking on several short tours as well as releasing his second solo EP entitled “Cool As A Cucumber.” Kai is often joined by a revolving cast of good friends and musicians, who also make appearances on his records. Violet Ricker is the first Executive Director of the newly created Main Street program.

Violet has served as the Executive Director of Waukegan Main Street for the past three years and has extensive training in the Main Street program approach of economic development through historic preservation. Her proven experience in organizational growth, fundraising, event planning, volunteer coordination, public relations, and business retention and recruitment will support the excellent work already being done by the dedicated volunteers, business owners, staff, and elected officials to ensure progress in downtown Kenosha.
