The Immigration Experience Illustrated is a collaborative exhibition featuring UW-Parkside Graphic Design Students, Gateway Graphic Design Students and Gateway English Language Learning Students on the concept of Immigration. This Image and Word project is a reflection on personal experiences or based on historical research on what Immigration looks like today.

Gateway College
The English Language Learning students enrolled at Gateway wrote phrases and short writings about their personal immigration experience. They thought about the colors or images that remind them of their experience. Instructor Elaine Asma’s ELL Students then met with John Mizer’s Graphic Design class to create a poster. The Graphic Design students designed a poster that both students agreed on. The posters are supported by two statements, one from the Designer and one from the ELL Student that give more insight into the finished poster.

UW-Parkside
UW-Parkside Typography Students were invited to participate in the collaboration under the instruction of Professor Carey Watters. UW-Parkside Students were encouraged to reflect on their personal immigration experiences or encouraged to do historical research on both immigration politics and typography.

Public Craft Brewery – Beer for the People …

by Mary C. Spence

Public Craft Brewing Co. recreates the time honored tradition of the local brewery. Our high quality craft brewed ales are on tap around Kenosha and at our taproom in refillable growlers. We provide casual and entertaining opportunities to enjoy quality craft brewed ales while supporting the downtown Kenosha community…”

Public Craft BreweryEver wonder what kind of place might have home-brewed beer, art displays, books, board games, air hockey, and a unique gift selection? If so, you might want to stop in at the Public Craft Brewing Company (PCBC) for some good old-fashioned camaraderie, and of course, some of Kenosha’s best home-brewed beer! They are located at 716 58th Street in Kenosha. Hours are Thursday and Friday, 3:30 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 12 to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 12 to 6 p.m.

PCBC started up a year ago, when Matt and his wife made a conscious effort not to be just another bar, but a sustainable part of our community, by using what’s been around society forever – beer – to connect local people, artists, and students and, at the same time, encourage intelligent conversation among beer-lovers. Although there are absolutely no TVs (for a reason), there is Wi Fi!

You may also want to peruse the shelves stocked with books, Scrabble and other board games or play on the old air hockey table. Visit with the friendly owners, Matt and Danielle Geary, both 1998 Carthage College art major graduates as they talk about their passion, beer!Don’t forget to purchase a growler as a gift for any occasion for the hard-to-buy-for beer drinker connoisseur! Purchase an empty growler in advance, and escort the lucky beer drinker to PCBC to choose which beer he or she would like. What fun!

You can also try the beer sampler to find your very own favorite! And, if you aren’t in the mood for a beer, they just started making root beer! What a relief that most of their products are made right here in Wisconsin and do not use corn or GMO’s! I feel smarter already! You can also bring in your own food, and small parties are welcome to use the conference table located towards the back.

The Geary’s vision is that PCBC be a laid-back place where people can hang out, where art fills the walls, and conversations fill the air! After stopping in and hanging out last Friday evening, I believe they are well on their way!

Finally, you’ll also want to check out the current “Pop-Up” gallery exhibit. According to Amy Misurelli-Sorensen, artist and Gallery Director and Curator of University of Wisconsin-Parkside Galleries, artwork currently on display at PCBC is by Parkside students, current and former faculty, and alumni. The display will culminate with a Closing show celebration on Friday, February 21, from 4 to 9 p.m., featuring music by UW-Parkside’s Jazz Combo.

This exhibit highlights “Two Nudes with Oak Stool and Canvas”, a lithograph by noted realist artist Philip Pearlstein. In the UW-Parkside collection, our artists present their own figure studies. Images in the exhibition invite discussion of the cultural meaning of sexuality, censorship, violence and abstraction. Curated by Kenosha artist and business owner Chet Griffith.

One End of Forever…

One End of Forever

Racine artist Phil Schultz lives with a number of disabilities and very few financial resources. Nevertheless, over the course of the last thirty years he has created a vast body of paintings and welding steel and cast bronze sculptures, which have remained largely hidden from public view. Sept 4-November 8, UW-Parkside Foundation Gallery presents Phillip Schultz: One End of Forever.

Schultz is a prolific writer. He has written several plays, a paper on linear perspective, and nearly fifteen thousand sonnets. Schultz’s poetry and prose focus on the same subjects that his painting and sculpture do. Like many artists, Schultz writes about sadness, anxiety and frustration on one hand, and happiness, passion and exuberance on the other.

Schultz’s writing is featured in the Parkside exhibition and a selection of his sonnets will be on view along with photos from his studio in September’s Kenosha Pop-Up Gallery.

Saturday, September 14, 2013.
For one night only the first floor of the unnamed building at 5715-6th Avenue in downtown Kenosha will serve as a Pop-Up Gallery.

Life on Lake Michigan at the Turn of the Twentieth Century – glass plate negatives made into large format prints

by Patricia Briggs

I became obsessed with UW-Parkside Archive’s collection of dry plate negatives last year when director Anna Stadick shared them with me. I determined to scan, print and research a group of the negatives for a little show for the Parkside gallery. We have just installed an exhibition of large format digital photographs pulled from high quality scans of the original negatives that date to 188os to early 1900s. These photos show mostly beautiful boats on the Lake Michigan, but there are a few other subjects as well. Enjoy this slide show and vista Parkside’s E. H. Mathis Gallery located in the theatre lobby if you can.

By researching the names of the vessels mentioned in the index to the slidesI found that many of the ships shown were well-known racing yachts at the time. I had no idea that yacht racing was a popular spectator sport at the turn of the century, and that the Lake Michigan Yachting Association hosted a regatta in 1901 that sailed between Chicago and Kenosha. The images are marvelous.
